In a first-of-its-kind decision, a foreigner – Cuban boxing coach BI Fernandez – was on Tuesday named among the eight coaches who were nominated for the prestigious Dronacharya award. The others who have been nominated are Virendar Poonia (athletics), Yashvir Singh (wrestling), Harendra Singh (hockey), Bhawani Mukherjee (table tennis), JS Bhatia (athletics), Sunil Dabbas (kabaddi) and Satyapal Singh (para games).A 15-member selection committee, chaired by former India hockey star Aslam Sher Khan, sifted through 53 applications before pruning them down to eight. As per the rules, a maximum of five coaches are presented the award. Now, the sports ministry will announce the winners.Another selection panel has recommended six names for the Dhyan Chand Award, presented for the lifetime achievement. Those included in the list are Jagraj Singh Mann (athletics), Parminder Singh (football), Gundeep Kumar (hockey), Vinod Kumar (wrestling) and Sukhbir Singh Tokas (para).Fernandez has been associated with Indian boxing for more than two decades and two of his wards have won medals at every international level, including the Olympics.”Fernandez has been one of the most consistent foreign coaches that we have had in years. His students have won medals at all top international events. Eight boxers, who were trained under him made it to the Olympics this year and four of them were under 20 years of age which speaks of how he has groomed them,” a member of the selection committee said. The Cuban’s contract expired after the London Olympics, where Indian male boxers did well but were unlucky not to finish on the podium.advertisementMC Mary Kom, who won a bronze in the women’s category, was also his student at the national camp for the London Olympics.”I am thrilled to hear about my nomination. It’s a great honour to see many of my trainees win medals at major international events and, secondly, it’s a great satisfaction to be acknowledged for my contribution to Indian boxing,” Fernandez told Mail Today.”I have seen the transformation of Indian boxing. Our boxers were not a force to reckon with when I started back in 1991, but in the last two decades they have won medals at the Olympics, the World Championships, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, and that is the most satisfying achievement for me,” he added.Virendar Poonia has been training his discus throwing wife Krishna for years now and his achievements were also taken into account by the committee.Under Virendar, Krishna won a gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, a bronze at the Guangzhou Asian Games, and finished a creditable seventh at the London Olympics. “It’s a matter of pride for me to have been chosen for this award. The recognition will only motivate me and my wife to go further,” said Virendar. “We are not done yet and there is still a lot left in us.”Yashvir, who mentored Olympic medal-winning wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, was also ecstatic. “It is the best day of my life. I was there with the team in Beijing and in London and I appreciate the government recognising my hard work. It would not have been possible without the hard work of our wrestlers who won us medals, and this is truly momentous day in my life,” said Yashvir.Bhawani Mukherjee became the first table tennis coach to have been chosen for the Dronacharya Award. “Players have always been my priority and this recognition will, hopefully, help in raising the profile of table tennis in India,” he said. The Dronacharya award, which carries Rs 5 lakh and a citation and is conferred to coaches of different sports for their noteworthy contribution, will be presented by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, the National Sports Day. read more
