Tottenham manager Pochettino: Solskjaer has no extra motivation to beat meby Freddie Taylor9 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveTottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino says Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no extra motivation to beat his side on Sunday.Pochettino is the favourite to take over from Solskjaer when his caretaker stint at Old Trafford is expected to end at the end of the season. But the Argentine doesn’t believe that will motivate Solksjaer to get one over him at Wembley.”The motivation is already going to be there. When you are a manager or a coach, you cannot be focused on all the rumours. The most important thing is to have motivation to do our jobs in the best way,” Pochettino said.”Of course United will come to win and for him there is massive motivation or challenge to manage Manchester United. For me it’s a massive challenge to be at Tottenham.”We are so competitive, we are people that love to win and hate to lose. It’s always about wanting to win. Erling Haaland & Man Utd: Why Raiola not to blame if move failsby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveCOMMENT: So do they do it? Even if he’s involved? Even if he’s the man sitting across from them at the table? Do Manchester United push through with their pursuit of Erling Haaland…?The he in question is Mino Raiola. And the short answer to the above is, ‘yes’.Per-Joar Hansen, Norway’s assistant coach, let the cat out of the bag – United are interested in Haaland. And there is a real chance RB Salzburg will have a fight on their hands to keep him.”There is good interest from clubs like Barcelona and Manchester United, but we are very pleased with where he is,” revealed Hansen. “The choices he has made so far have been perfect, and he has plenty of time. Chances will come.” If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the United manager, wants a reunion with his former Molde protege, then he will have to deal with Raiola. The Italian now a card carrying member of Haaland’s entourage. He’s not the main fixer, that role’s with Dad Alfie Inge and Erling’s prime agent, Tore Pedersen. But he is available, on call, and should the decision be made for Haaland to leave Salzburg, he’ll jump into action.”My dad has regular contact with him, yes,” says Erling. “He was involved when I signed for Salzburg, so I have faith that he can help me.”But as much as it’s being portrayed as a problem for United, perhaps even a deal breaker, the opposite is more the truth. The relationship between United and the super agent is good. It isn’t in absolute robust health, but it also isn’t in the dire straits as has been claimed – despite all the angst around Paul Pogba.Yes, Raiola has had his say on Pogba and his wish to leave for Real Madrid. But this is strictly the tail wagging the dog stuff. Raiola wouldn’t be in the press, nor on social media, trying to shake things up without the approval of the player. He never acts independently. With no signed contract and a partnership secured by a handshake, Raiola only kicks into action on instructions from his client. If Pogba was feeling pressured. If he believed he was being taken advantage of, the midfielder could simply end his association with a phone call and sign for someone else. It’s why Romelu Lukaku’s split from Raiola was done with so little fanfare. So effusive with his praise for the Italian upon signing for United, the Belgian sought new representation ahead of his move to Inter Milan. And it must be said… the bust-up with Mike Phelan in Shanghai; the decision to go AWOL and train with Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht; even arriving for preseason overweight, all this occurred after Lukaku’s relationship with Raiola had long been dissolved. And while some inside Carrington do curse his name, there’s also a begrudging admission that re-establishing their connection with Raiola hasn’t left the club worse off. No-one has had cause to complain about Sergio Romero. Nor the impact made by Zlatan Ibrahimovic during his 18 months with the club. Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s arrival may not have worked out, but there’s never been any bitterness or ill-feeling expressed by the player’s camp over his time at Old Trafford. So a love-in for Raiola? Well, not quite. Of course the commissions are madness. And you do wonder about that money leaving the English game when seeing the demise of the likes of Bury. But Raiola is working within the system. Within the boundaries that have been set up. And of course he’s going to chance his arm. Just as Ed Woodward, United vice-chairman exec, did all summer regarding Pogba and Real Madrid. Pogba isn’t twice the player he was when leaving Juventus three years ago. Indeed, without the potential tag at 26, this column would argue he’s worth less. But Woodward, like Raiola, chanced his arm, demanding €160-200m from Real Madrid to sell the midfielder. And also like Raiola, he’d argue – no matter how obnoxious the figures may be – that he was defending the best interests of his client: the club. This industry isn’t a cartoon, with distinct black and white characters. There’s a reason why Raiola can work confidently with a handshake while others, including multi-national management firms, will demand a signature on an exclusive, long-term service contract. There’s something to be said for the loyalty Raiola generates from his players and their families.Alfie Haaland went through the wringer as a player. He saw the good – and the bad. The former Leeds United and Manchester City midfielder is no mug. Nor is Tore Pedersen. And while we’re at it, you can add Solskjaer to that Norwegian trifecta. With Raiola sitting across from him, the United manager won’t blink. If there’s value in adding Haaland to his squad, Solskjaer will negotiate with the Italian. Reality and myth can be separated inside Carrington. ARLINGTON, TX – DECEMBER 29: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes during the Goodyear Cotton Bowl against the USC Trojans in the second quarter at AT&T Stadium on December 29, 2017 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)Urban Meyer hasn’t lost many games like Ohio State lost tonight. The Buckeyes were outplayed in every facet of the game at Purdue, losing to the Boilermakers, 49-20, in West Lafayette, Ind.It’s the first loss of the season for Ohio State, which falls to 7-1 on the year. OSU is still right in the College Football Playoff mix – the computer models still give the Buckeyes a solid chance of making it, especially if they win out – but a lot is going to have to change.Meyer spoke honestly about just what is going to have to change for the Buckeyes following tonight’s loss to Purdue. The main thing: Ohio State has to run the ball better. The Buckeyes totaled just 76 yards on 25 carries against the Boilermakers’ defense. Ohio State possesses two seemingly elite tailbacks in J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, but they combined for just 69 yards against this defense.“Down the stretch, we’re going to need a run game,” Meyer told reporters at his post-game press conference. This has been a common issue for Ohio State in losses during the Meyer era, too. The Buckeyes’ famously failed to get Ezekiel Elliott going in a home loss to Michigan State in 2015. Ohio State had more issues than just its running game tonight, of course, but it always seems to be a problem in defeat. Can that change moving forward?Ohio State will attempt to get things going again on Nov. 3 against Nebraska.

He was recently a candidate for the Tennessee job but ultimately remained with the Wolfpack in the ACC.Since taking over the job in 2013, Doeren has coached NC State to four bowl games, winning three and finishing the 2017 season ranked No. 23.

Oklahoma defeated West Virginia 59-31. (Photo by Brett Deering/Getty Images)The college football offseason is set to enter a new period soon, as spring football is approaching for several programs around the country. The true offseason – the time for serious player and coaching movement – is mostly over, or at the very least, coming close to wrapping up.Which college football program “won” the offseason?According to one analyst, it’s not Alabama or Clemson…247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons believes Oklahoma might be the program that “won” the offseason. The Sooners added former Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts via a transfer.“I think Lincoln Riley is going to cater that offense to be perfect for him, and he’s going to kill it,” Simmons said on the Cover 3 College Football Podcast. “I legitimately believe we could see three-straight Heisman Trophy winners. I think there’s that opportunity there for sure.”Hurts is expected to start under center for Oklahoma in 2019. The Sooners will likely be a preseason top five team.“Jalen Hurts is the perfect addition to that team, not only from a skillset standpoint but he adds leadership at the quarterback position,” Simmons said. “I don’t know what Tanner Mordecai was bringing to the table from a leadership standpoint, Spencer Rattler the true freshman quarterback could have battled for a starting job probably if he had enrolled in the midterm. But you can’t ask for a freshman to lead that group and feel confident in what’s going to happen. I think Jalen Hurts comes in there and immediately wins the team, and they’re just good. They’re set on offense.”Oklahoma opens its season on Aug. 31 against Houston.
MIAMI, FL – DECEMBER 29: Kyler Murray #1 of the Oklahoma Sooners carries the ball in the third quarter during the College Football Playoff Semifinal against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)In the span of a few months, Kyler Murray has risen to the top of most NFL draft boards with plenty of suitors in the top of the NFL Draft order vying for his services. But at least one now-former NFL head coach believes that teams should be wary of drafting him No. 1 overall.Appearing on the NFL Network this past week, former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis urged the Arizona Cardinals to avoid drafting Murray with the No. 1 pick.He explained that the team already has quarterback Josh Rosen, who they drafted last year, and should be working to build around him. Via Yahoo Sports:“I just think this team, this group of players, they drafted a quarterback [Rosen] last year, and I think you gotta go in with him as your starting quarterback and build your football team around him with a young quarterback,” Lewis said.Lewis also stressed that drafting a quarterback in the first round for a second year in a row would be akin to hitting the reset button again. Such a move would endanger the Cardinals’ chances of building off of their 2018 campaign.“I don’t think as a football team and a franchise you can afford to start over again,” Lewis said. “Every time you draft a young quarterback, you’re starting from scratch.”Lewis has some first-hand experience with the No. 1 overall pick, having used it to draft Carson Palmer with the first pick in 2003.After sitting his first year and having a below-average debut campaign in 2004, Palmer exploded onto the scene in 2005, making his first of back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances. That year, Palmer led the league in completion percentage and touchdowns as he led the Bengals to the playoffs for the first time since 1990.Unfortunately for Lewis, neither Palmer nor his successor, Andy Dalton, were able to sustain the success they found in their early years at the position.Lewis was fired at the end of the 2018 season after posting three straight losing seasons. He is currently a commentator for the Alliance of American Football.[Yahoo Sports]
PISCATAWAY, NJ – NOVEMBER 10: Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Michigan Wolverines coaches against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights during the third quarter at HighPoint.com Stadium on November 10, 2018 in Piscataway, New Jersey. Michigan won 42-7. (Photo by Corey Perrine/Getty Images)The pressure is on for Michigan football. The Big Ten could see a huge shakeup with Urban Meyer’s departure from Ohio State, and Jim Harbaugh’s team is the favorite to step in and take the league title in 2019.Of course, that is easier said than done. Ohio State remains very talented, and the Big Ten East is one of the toughest divisions in the league. The best case scenario for Michigan is pretty clear. The Wolverines defense remains elite through some departures, and Shea Patterson takes a leap with new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis remaking the team’s offense. That team can win the Big Ten crown and crack the top four to land a spot in the College Football Playoff. The worst case is a bit shakier for Harbaugh’s club.247Sports outlined the best and worst case scenarios for every Big Ten program, including the league frontrunner Michigan football.Despite those tough division games, a cross-division battle with Wisconsin, and the non-conference rivalry showdown with Notre Dame, the site’s Brad Crawford can’t see Michigan going worse than 9-3 this year. That is obviously a good place to be in for most teams, but would still be pretty disappointing for a team looking to take the next step. It’s hard to pick out three Big Ten losses on the schedule this season for the Wolverines outside of another potential loss to Ohio State and a 1-1 split in road games with Penn State and Wisconsin, so we’ll go with No. 3 coming via Notre Dame in October. That’s a must-win game for Michigan as far as College Football Playoff hopes are concerned and could really turn this season from good to potentially great. It’ll come in handy too in the eyes of the selection committee if the Wolverines are in contention down the stretch. The 12-0 ceiling, 9-3 floor is exactly the same as rival Ohio State. The Buckeyes may well be the more talented club, and have the Big Ten title pedigree, but Michigan retains, and may have upgraded, its coaching staff, and has plenty of experience itself.[247Sports]

India suffered a crushing 80-run defeat in the first game of the three-match series in Wellington on Wednesday.”India need a mix of both [experiment for the World Cup and focus on winning series in New Zealand]. The World Cup is just a few months away. To arrive on a final squad, there needs to be a few experiments. In this T20I series, you could get an idea of who the team can look at [for the World Cup]. The likes of Vijay Shankar can be observed. Even in T20Is, you can figure out if the players will be suited for the 50-over format or not,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.Gavaskar also said India can experiment with their playing XIs and try out different combinations in the T20 series in New Zealand to get an idea how the players handle pressure.”Yes, you need to win matches in New Zealand. But the T20 World Cup is far away, it’s in October 2020. I won’t be very disappointed even if India lose this T20I series. If the performances are good, then there’s no problem. The team is right now focused on the World Cup. Thus it’s important that chances are given to players like Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and Krunal Pandya. The way they handle pressure here will give the team an idea of whether they are ready for the World Cup or not,” Gavaskar said.advertisementGavaskar also backed the idea of using Virat Kohli at No.4 during the 2019 ICC World Cup in England and Wales. He said an important player like Kohli needed protection in swing-friendly conditions.”There needs to be flexibility. More the flexibility in the batting line-up, more beneficial to the team. Let’s look at what happened in the Champions Trophy final. Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Mohammed Aamir early. When Virat Kohli came out to bat, the ball was swinging quite a bit. Pakistan were pumped up after having put 300 on the board,” Gavaskar told Aaj Tak on Wednesday. The second T20 between India and New Zealand will be played on February 8 in Auckland. Also Read | Dinesh Karthik could be India’s 3rd opener in World Cup: Sunil GavaskarAlso Read | Sunil Gavaskar on Rishabh Pant’s failure in Wellington: Anybody can fail in one matchAlso Read | Mohammed Shami key to India’s chances at the World Cup: Karsan GhavriAlso Read | Virat Kohli can bat at No.4 depending on conditions in England: Sunil GavaskarFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Press Trust of India MumbaiFebruary 15, 2019UPDATED: February 15, 2019 15:53 IST Smriti Mandhana has been doing bulk of the scoring for India in the past few months (BCCI Photo)India women’s team opener Smriti Mandhana, who is in blazing form, said on Friday that the team’s coach W V Raman has set her targets to bat for a specific number of overs to develop her patience at the crease.”He (Raman) has been telling me to play 30 overs in ODIs as he knows that if I bat till 30 overs, I will continue to bat. And in 20 over games he has been telling me to bat for 13 overs,” the 22-year-old Mandhana, a Red Bull athlete, told PTI.”He’s giving me targets to bat a certain number of balls, because strike rate and those kinds of things never concern me, the only problem is the patience aspect. He is helping with that and giving me targets to bat through these many balls and that many overs and that is being great,” said the left-handed batswoman.Mandhana, asked specifically whether the team was too dependent on her, replied that the perception was not correct.”No, I don’t think so. We have got a lot of match-winners in our team. It is just that sometimes someone goes through a lean patch and you need to cover up for your teammate. And sometimes that would be the case, if I am not going, the middle order will look after me (help me).”So you can’t say that they (other batswomen) are too dependent, but I think the main responsibility as a batter is to win matches and dependence never comes (in the way),” she stressed.advertisementDuring last year’s women’s T20 tri-series, Mandhana had said that she was throwing her wicket away after setting herself in.Eleven months later, she feels that she is being able to improve 10 per cent on this aspect, but the next aim was to carry on batting till the end of the innings.”Somewhat, yes, may be 10 per cent I have improved on that. From 50 to 60s, I have gone to 70s. But I’m still leaving 20-30 runs when we are chasing. I think it will be good if I come back not out. Hopefully I can do that against England in the (upcoming) ODI and the T20 series,” she said.”Im really excited (for the England series) and we are playing the ICC Championships and we need six points to be up there. Hopefully we will all stick together and win the ODI series (against England). I hope that I can win more matches for India,” Mandhana remarked. The ODI series against England starts Friday next and all the three matches in the 50-over rubber will be played at the Wankhede Stadium here. For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
