Alex Hales withdrawn from England World Cup squad following drugs ban

first_imgFlamboyant England opener Alex Hales has been withdrawn from the England squads ahead of a busy international season in order “to create the right environment” around the senior national team.Hales has also been withdrawn from the preliminary squad for the 2019 World Cup and the T20I and ODI squads for series against Ireland and Pakistan, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Monday.The strong action from ECB comes days after Hales was handed a 21-day ban for recreational drug use.”We’ve worked hard to create the right environment around the England team and need to consider what is in the best interests of the team, to ensure they are free from any distractions and able to focus on being successful on the pitch,” Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, Ashley Giles, said in a statement.”I want to make it clear this is not the end of Alex’s career as an England player. The ECB and the PCA will continue to aid Alex and work alongside his county club Nottinghamshire to give him the support he needs, to help him fulfil his potential as a professional cricketer.”Prior to his ban, Alex Hales had taken an indefinite break from cricket due to personal reasons, his club Nottinghamshire had confirmed earlier. Hales had missed Nottinghamshire’s 50-over match against Lancashire last week.This is not the first time ECB has taken action against Alex Hales over disciplinary issues.
